Guidance Through Removal Proceedings

Being placed in deportation or removal proceedings means that a person must appear before an Immigration Judge, who will determine whether the person can remain in the United States.

This process can feel overwhelming, but being placed in removal proceedings does not automatically mean someone will be deported. Depending on the circumstances, a person may have the opportunity to apply for relief from removal.

Attorney Stephanie Dyson represents individuals in deportation and removal proceedings and helps clients understand their options, prepare their cases, and move through the process with experienced legal guidance.

Understanding Deportation or Removal Proceedings

In removal proceedings, an Immigration Judge determines whether a person is removable from the United States. If the person is removable, the Judge then determines whether the person qualifies for any relief from removal. Each case depends on the person's immigration history, eligibility, documentation, and individual circumstances.

Relief from removal may include, but is not limited to:

  • Asylum

  • Withholding of removal

  • Protection under the Convention Against Torture

  • Adjustment of status

  • Temporary Protected Status (TPS)

  • Cancellation of removal for permanent residents

  • Cancellation of removal for non-permanent residents

  • Voluntary departure

  • Termination of proceedings
